What Exactly Is an Ice Dam?

An ice dam is exactly what it sounds like: a solid block of ice that builds up along the lower edge of your roof (the eaves).

When snow lands on your roof, it’s supposed to sit there until the outside temperature warms up enough to melt it naturally. When it melts naturally, the water runs down the shingles, into the gutters, and out the downspouts.

But an ice dam forms when the snow melts unnaturally from underneath.

If the top part of your roof gets warm while the outside air is still freezing, the snow sitting on the shingles turns to water. That water runs down the slope of the roof. But when it hits the overhang—the part of the roof that extends past your exterior walls—it hits a freezing cold surface.

The water instantly turns to ice. Over a few days or weeks, this process repeats. Snow melts higher up, runs down, and freezes at the edge. Eventually, a thick wall of ice forms.

Once that dam is big enough, the new water running down the roof has nowhere to go. It pools up behind the block of ice. And here is the scary part: roof shingles are designed to shed water that is flowing down. They are absolutely not designed to hold standing water.

That pooled water finds the tiny seams between your shingles. It backs up, gets under the roofing material, soaks through the tar paper or synthetic underlayment, and eventually rots the wood decking. From there, it drips straight onto your attic insulation and eventually through the drywall of your ceiling.

The Root Cause: It’s Not Your Gutters, It’s Your Attic

When people see ice jammed in their gutters, they immediately blame the gutters. They think the gutters are clogged, or they think they need to install heated cables inside the gutter troughs.

Gutters don’t cause ice dams. Your attic does.

Ice dams are a temperature problem. The only reason the snow on your roof is melting when it’s 15 degrees outside is because the heat from inside your house is escaping into your attic.

Think about it. You’re running your furnace to keep your house at a comfortable 70 degrees. Heat naturally rises. If your ceiling isn’t perfectly sealed and heavily insulated, that 70-degree air pushes right through the drywall and up into the attic space.

Instead of your attic being the same freezing temperature as the air outside (which is what you want in the winter), your attic turns into an oven. It heats up the underside of the roof decking, which melts the snow on top.

Where Is the Heat Coming From?

Most homes in McHenry County, especially those built more than 20 years ago, are leaking massive amounts of heat into the attic. We call these “attic bypasses.

1. Recessed Lighting (Can Lights) Those flush-mount lights in your kitchen and living room ceiling are basically chimneys for heat. Older can lights get extremely hot, and they are usually not air-tight. Warm air from your house goes right up through the gaps around the metal housing.

2. The Attic Hatch or Pull-Down Stairs Go look at the access panel for your attic. Is it just a piece of uninsulated plywood resting on a wood trim frame? If so, you are losing a ton of heat. That access door needs a thick weatherstripping seal and a heavy batt of insulation on top of it.

3. Bathroom Exhaust Fans When you take a hot shower and turn on the fan, where does that steam go? A properly installed exhaust fan pipes the humid, warm air all the way through the roof and vents it straight outside. But you would be shocked at how many homes we look at where the bathroom fan just dumps the hot, wet air directly into the attic. That heat hits the roof deck, melts the snow, and fuels the ice dam.

4. Chimney Chases and Plumbing Stacks Any time a pipe or a masonry chimney breaks through the ceiling to go up through the roof, the builder had to cut a hole in the drywall. Often, those holes are cut too big, leaving a one or two-inch gap around the pipe. Warm air rushes up through those gaps all winter long.

Can I just knock the ice off with a hammer?

No. Never hit your roof with a hammer, a hatchet, a baseball bat, or a shovel. When temperatures are below freezing, asphalt shingles get incredibly stiff and brittle. If you hit the ice, you are going to shatter the shingles right underneath it.

Do salt pucks or chemical ice melts work on roofs?

Hardware stores sell these big pucks of rock salt or calcium chloride that you are supposed to throw up on your roof. They might melt a small hole through the ice, but they are a terrible idea.

First, the salty water runs down into your gutters and downspouts, accelerating rust and corrosion on the metal. Second, the chemicals in those pucks break down the asphalt on your shingles, shortening the life of your roof. Finally, when that concentrated salt water splashes onto the ground below, it kills your grass and landscaping.

Does roof raking actually help?

Yes, using a roof rake is the only safe DIY method for managing ice dams, but you have to do it correctly.

A roof rake is a long aluminum pole with a flat plastic or metal blade on the end. You stand on the ground and pull the snow off the bottom three or four feet of your roof.

If there is no snow on the eaves to melt, it’s much harder for an ice dam to form. However, you have to be gentle. If you scrape the rake hard against the shingles, you will pull all the protective granules off the asphalt. Never pull out a ladder in the snow to rake higher up—it is incredibly dangerous. Keep both feet on the driveway and just clear the overhangs.

Are my gutter guards causing the ice dams?

We hear this a lot. A homeowner gets expensive gutter covers installed in the fall, and suddenly they have massive ice dams in the winter.

Gutter guards do not cause ice dams, but they do change how the ice forms. Because the top of the gutter is blocked by the metal mesh, the melted water freezes flat across the top of the guard instead of down inside the trough. This makes the ice dam look bigger and more noticeable. But the root cause is still the heat escaping from your attic, not the gutter guard itself.

The Permanent Fix: Insulation and Ventilation

If you are tired of dealing with this every winter, you need a two-part solution. You need to keep the heat out of the attic, and you need to flush the attic with cold air.

Step 1: Maximize Attic Insulation

Once you have sealed up all the air leaks around the can lights and exhaust fans, you need to look at your insulation levels. In Northern Illinois, the building code requires a minimum of R-49 for attic insulation, but going up to R-60 is even better.

If you poke your head into your attic and you can clearly see the wooden ceiling joists, you don’t have enough insulation. You need a thick, continuous blanket of blown-in fiberglass or cellulose insulation measuring at least 16 to 20 inches deep. This creates a thermal barrier that traps the heat inside your living room where you are actually paying for it.

Step 2: Fix the Roof Ventilation

Even with great insulation, a little bit of heat will eventually make its way into the attic. That heat needs a way to escape immediately. This is where your roof ventilation comes in.

A properly ventilated roof uses two types of vents: intake and exhaust.

  • Soffit Vents (Intake): These are the vents located under the overhangs of your roof. They pull freezing cold outside air into the bottom of the attic space.

  • Ridge Vents (Exhaust): These run along the very peak of your roof. Because heat rises, the warm air in the attic pushes out through the top of the roof.

As the hot air leaves through the ridge vent, it creates a vacuum that sucks cold air in through the soffits. This constant airflow keeps the underside of the roof decking freezing cold. If the roof deck is cold, the snow on top doesn’t melt until the sun comes out.

The Baffle Problem: One of the most common mistakes we see is blown-in insulation that was sprayed all the way to the edges of the roof, completely burying the soffit vents. If the soffits are blocked, the attic can’t breathe. We install foam chutes (called baffles) to hold the insulation back and keep that airway wide open.

If it’s February, the snow is two feet deep, and water is currently dripping onto your kitchen table, you can’t exactly tear off the roof or blow in new insulation today. You need emergency mitigation.

First, get a bucket under the drip and move your furniture. Puncture a small hole in the drywall where the water is pooling. It sounds counterintuitive to stab a hole in your ceiling, but it allows the water to drain freely into the bucket instead of spreading out and ruining the entire ceiling panel.

Next, call a professional roofing contractor. Do not climb an icy ladder with a hatchet.
